Talc Baby Powder Lawsuits

Over the past several years there have been a number of lawsuits filed on behalf of women who developed ovarian cancer that was traced to the use of talc baby powder. Results of these lawsuits have been positive for a number of those affected. Multi-million dollar awards have been granted in several of these lawsuits.

In October of 2016 a California woman who developed ovarian cancer was awarded $70 million dollars in her lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. There are currently about 2,000 women who are involved in talc baby powder lawsuits.

Talc Baby Powder

Not all baby powders or adult body powders contain talc. It is the talc baby powder that appears to be the culprit. Johnson & Johnson has been on the receiving end of these lawsuits because they continue to produce and sell talc baby powder and other adult body powders despite knowing, since the 1970s, that there might be a link between talc baby powder use and ovarian cancers.

Talc is a mineral composed mainly of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. Johnson & Johnson use it in their talc baby powder because it was good at absorbing moisture and reducing friction. Adult talc body powders are also widely used for deodorizing and hygiene.

According to the American Cancer Society there have been concerns about the use of talcum powder and cancer especially people who have had long term exposure to talc. This has been especially true for women who regularly, over a lifetime, use talcum powder in the genital area. It is also known that talc miners have a high risk of lung cancer from breathing in the fine powder.

Talc Classified as Possibly Carcinogenic

Research by the American Cancer Society about the use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer has produced mixed results. But based on limited evidence it has been determined that there is a link of some kind between use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified talc based body powders as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
