Defective Airbags Causing Injury & Death

The National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration has announced a consumer advisory urging owners of specific motor vehicles to act immediately on recall notices because of the seriousness of a defective airbag problem. The recall affects 7.8 million vehicles of certain Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors Vehicles. The list of recalled vehicles with defective airbags can be found on the NHTSA website. This massive recall involves 1 of every 5 cars on the road.

Immediate Action Urged on Defective Airbag Recall

Owners often ignore recalls or are slow to take action on vehicle recalls, but because of the seriousness of the airbag defect the effort to recall them has been stepped up. The exploding airbags can send metal & plastic fragments flying into the face and neck of the driver and passengers.

A story by CNN Money reported on a woman in Florida who was killed in an accident which should not have caused her death but for the fact that the exploding airbag caused fatal injury when metal fragments caused stab like wounds in her neck.

So far reports of incidents involving the defective airbags have been associated with vehicles in areas where there is high heat and/or high humidity. This makes the airbag recall especially urgent for owners of vehicles affected in Florida, Puerto Rico, limited areas near the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana, as well as Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii.

Because of the seriousness of the defect, all vehicles with these defective air bags, not just those in high heat/high humidity areas are being recalled. To date the flying shrapnel from defective airbags has resulted in at least four deaths and 30 injuries. On October 22, 2014 CBS news reported that they have heard complaints of exploding airbags from states including Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Maryland.
