Defective Airbag Recall Will Take Years

In 2014 Takada informed federal regulators about a dangerous defect in their airbags. A recent article in Consumer Reports documented that Takada knew they had a defective airbag problem years before they informed the federal regulators. Since 2014 there have been millions of vehicles recalled for the problem; however, it seems this serious problem has only grown in size and scope.

CNN Money reported on June 30, 2016 that federal safety regulators are warning more than 300,000 people who own certain Hondas and Acuras to stop driving them immediately because the risk of an exploding airbag is high.

Defective Airbag Explodes at 50% Higher Rate Than Other Airbags

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the Takada airbags are 50% more likely to explode when deployed in an accident compared to a 1% chance of any other brand of airbag. Although these defective airbags can cause serious injury, even death anywhere they are in use, they pose a higher risk in areas of the country where the weather is hot and humid.

To date the Takada defective air bag has caused 10 deaths in the United States and many more serious injuries. NHTSA reports that 8.9 million of these recalled Takada defective airbags were replaced last year alone. Yet so many of these defective airbags remain on the road it is expected to take through 2019 to replace them all. Even then, statistics show that only about 1/3 of vehicles recalled for repair or replacement of defective parts are ever brought in to be fixed

Do you drive a car with a recalled Takada air bag? The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration has identified vehicles in the most recent recall to be:

  • 2001-2002 Honda Civic
  • 2001-2002 Honda Accord
  • 2002-2003 Acura TL
  • 2002 Honda CR-V
  • 2002 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003 Acura CL
  • 2003 Honda Pilot
